Speaker: Nathan Barry (@nathanbarry)
Nathan Barry is passionate about design, writing and teaching. In his talk he reveals how he built an audience that allowed him to grow $200K+/year in revenue.
How to get started
- If you want to get good at something you need to practice continually.
- Started with a few apps that made him less thatn $1,000. That’s were learning happens
- He build 14 products but took a while before starting to make meaningful money
- People think of you as an instant success. That’s because they didn’t see all the products that failed
- Start small and grow
How to get customers to know (and care) about your product
- Teaching is a great way to drag people to you
- Mentioned Chris Coyier of CSS-Tricks who build his audience by teaching
- Don’t just work on your thing. Tell other people about it and teach everything you know
- Chefs share their expertise. By putting things out they will get more people. They aren’t worried that someone is going to take their recipes, open a restaurant across the street and put them out of business.
Instead, they’re going to have more fans, more business - You don’t teach because you are an expert.
You become an expert by teaching - You need to make a bit of progress every day in the product in a consistent way
- Focus on a small audience and create products that are related to one another so that you can sell the same audience more than once
- Target an audience you are part of and it’s easier to teach there
